hey guys,
sorry this is coming a bit late, i kept going back and forth on what i wanted to cover. originally i was planning to do God is Creator, but i'm going to switch it up and basically do an extended intro to the series. in a sense, really the first God is, will be God is and i'll be working through exodus 3, which i think fits nicely with what we've been doing and where we are headed. so here's my outline thus far, let me know what you think. hopefully it makes sense. sorry about the formatting, it just auto adjusts like that when you copy and paste..

Hey Eugene... sorry I wasn't able to get you thoughts on the series sooner. I like what you're doing though. I think an extended introduction is always good.
ReplyDeleteI like the passage you chose. And I LOVE the idea that who we are called to be is dependent upon God.
I would be careful though... it looks like you're tackling a lot in this outline. One thing I'd like us all to practice is simplifying. Especially as we work towards preparing accessible messages, we want to become really good at making deep points simply. Does that make sense? Take the kids deep, but be "straightforward" about it.
With that said, I think the "Study of God" section (1C) might be somewhat tangential. I think those things are all true about the study of God, but the point of studying God for US is "to answer the question 'who are you'". I would take that and run with it. Make that ONE point really well. You can definitely touch on those other points, but I would just be careful about how much time you spend on them.
But besides that, I think it looks great. I think you've really nailed what this series is about.
wait, are we answering the question of "who are you?" as in, who are we as followers of God?
ReplyDeleteI like this focus and I love the passage too. (Eugene, I hope our discussion didn't solely make the decision not to do creator... we can talk more later). But yeah, you might be trying to do too much. How long do you think your intro is? If we are to focus on who we are, then yeah I guess focus on that and figure out how that ties in with Moses. But if we are answer who God is (I would nuance it as in what kind of God do we have faith in), then you pretty much have an instant sermon with Exodus... its nearly the whole basis of the OT!
the "study of God" part is mainly just a quote, sort of the why even take on the aspect of "who are you"
ReplyDeletethe outline is actual a lot simplier than what i have, at least i think so. i just wrote down everything for my own benefit.
so really in the simplest form the outline could be...
I. Who Am I
II. God's Response -- (1) our dependence on God
III. Who Are You
IV. God's Response -- (1) God's promise to us
brett: the question of "who are you" is not who we are as followers of God, but more so answering who God is, so "who are You"
ReplyDeletethe intro isn't too long, at least i don't think it is. its mainly briefly recapping what we have been going through and then pointing us toward what we will be going through.
i still like the "God is Creator" attribute, i didn't change it because of what we talked about. though i did feel as if i should study up on it more. so maybe a latter one i'll tackle it, unless someone else wants to do it.
so basically i decided to change it up because i really liked this passage and felt like it parallels what we have covered and what we are going to cover in "God Is"
OH man!! sorry I'm soo late. I hope you can still read this. I like the transition from ourselves to God. I think your outline is good, but seems to cover a lot of stuff. I would work on keeping it as clear and simple as possible. I really like the idea of being humbled, expanding our minds, and being brought to worship. Having that be your main focus will help form your message. I'll be praying for Friday and for you.
ReplyDeleteOK, I see the question of Who is God, so Who are you. I think that works
ReplyDeleteI think yeah, the simpler outline I can see where you're going with it. I guess I wasn't sure how much you were covering with the enlarged one
